What Do Bed Bugs Look Like – Check Out A Few Facts

Some questions like where do bed bugs come from or what do chiggers look like are always on the minds of people who hear about other people suffering from bites or are at the receiving end themselves. One of the main reasons for this has been the lack of sufficient visibility of these pests. You do not get to see them like you would see cockroaches, flies or mosquitoes. They are highly secretive and are quick to hide within tiny crevices and nooks of furniture, upholstery and other places making it difficult for anybody to spot them.

This has been one primary reason for their continued proliferation. When you do not know or can fathom what do bed mites look like, then how do you get rid of bed bugs or bed mites? Moreover, the fact that they operate silently at night and do not cause pain or discomfort to the person whose blood is being sucked is another reason for them continuing to escape the notice of people. They manage this by injecting a very special anesthetic like chemical into the host through their proboscis. This creates a drowsy effect in the person and he happily dozes away even as these pests are sucking his blood.

That is not all. It has been discovered that even in cases when a particular person has gone to the doctor with some skin rash conditions to show him, not many doctors are able to quickly identify the source being due to bed bugs and often treat the patient for mosquito bites. This can only be attributed to the fact that these pests are very difficult to get spotted and there is not much information about them available to the public as well as to doctors.

So what is the reason for this lack of awareness about where do bed bugs come from?

It needs to be mentioned here that nobody can be blamed for the above situation. After all, nobody heard about them till a few years back. Yes, bed bugs were virtually eliminated and were not to be found in most developed countries, thanks to enhanced hygiene and clean surroundings. Though they did exist even in these countries many years back, higher standards of living coupled with better awareness among people about keeping their premises clean ensured that these pests could not breed and were thus almost wiped out.

However, they have managed to make a comeback and that says a lot about their adaptability and ability to adjust to new conditions. It is believed that since lack of hygiene or cleanliness cannot be attributed as the reason for their comeback, the cause lies elsewhere. Experts who have been studying and researching on methods on how to get rid of bed bugs believe that these pests have managed to make a reentry into developed countries through the increased travel that is now taking place by people all over the world.

These bed bugs being tiny can attach themselves to any baggage, clothing pretty easily and the traveler would not even know that he is carrying some of them in this personal belongings. When people travel to other countries and stay in hotels, they invariably tend to provide sufficient opportunities to these pests to attach themselves to their baggage and personal effects. They thus bring them to their individual countries and since they are absolutely unaware of this development, there are no measures they take to sanitize their belongings. The bed bugs then get the opportunity to breed in new surroundings and as they are pretty good at adjusting to any conditions, they are quickly able to do so. This is what has happened according to the experts and that is how even developed countries now have to face the scourge of these pests.

Now do you get the picture? When people are absolutely unaware of the fact that such pests even exist, there is no question of them looking for their signs actively or even taking the efforts to identify them. It is only in recent years that the internet through Google and Flicker has enabled people to see actual pictures of bed bugs and bed bugs bites.  They are now able to compare their skin rash conditions with that on the pictures and take effective remedial measures.

So what do bed bugs look like? How do bed mites look like?

Well, they are dark brown or black in color. They cannot fly but that does not make them easy to trap by any stretch of imagination. Their ultra small size coupled with their speed in being able to get into nooks and crannies of the house provide them enough opportunities to escape the human eye. They have an oval body shape and measure about 4mm long and about 2mm wide. Their tops and bottoms are flat and this gives their body the leverage to move quickly on surfaces.

The eggs of these bugs are like apple seeds with ultra small hairs. When these grow up, they shed their skin and very often you can find this molting strewn about in the beds and wooden furniture. This is one of the indicators that your house has been invaded by bed bugs and unless you are able to eliminate them totally along with any hatchlings and eggs, you will not be able to have a good night’s sleep.

The bed bugs acquire the brown or black color as they take to feeding on the host. Their skin is quite transparent and you can on close observation often make out how the intake of blood changes the color of their body surface and renders it as a dark brown or black patch.

What is the nature of these pests?

These are parasites. They revel in sucking the blood of their hosts and over time has evolved to be able to feed on warm blooded mammals and human beings. Though their bites are not dangerous in that they cannot cause any infectious diseases, it is the rash they and peculiar pattern of bites they leave on the skin that causes concern in people.

These bugs concentrate on the exposes areas of the face, arms and neck as they are easily accessible at night. When they bite daily at night, they end up leaving a straight or crooked line of minute punctures on the skin. The host ends up scratching these punctures and if left untreated, they develop into small red bumps or blisters.

Failing to take action even at this stage may lead to a greater infection of these blisters and they can cause pain.

So how do you get rid of bed bugs?

The only way is to quickly identify their presence by looking at the undersides of the mattresses, the bed frames,   wooden furniture and so on. You then need to call upon the services of a professional exterminating agency. They would know about what pesticides to use on these bugs and in what concentration.

There are options you can try out when it comes to the spray being used. Try to insist on environment friendly pesticides so that you and your family do not have to breathe in the rather harmful fumes of strong chemicals that are normally present in the commonly used sprays. These organic and ‘green’ sprays may cost you more but they are well worth the cost as you need to take health considerations of the elders and children in your family.
