What Are Bed Bugs – Some Useful Information
While other insects like cockroaches, lizards, flies and mosquitoes continue to torment humanity in many parts of the world, bed bugs till a few years back were virtually eliminated in some of the more advanced countries. Indeed better living conditions coupled with stringent hygienic conditions followed made it difficult for these pests to breed. The use of pesticides like DDT in very high amounts virtually wiped them out.
However, in the last few years, they have been able to make a comeback and are now becoming a major menace once again even in these developed countries. One of the reasons could be attributed to the absolute non usage of DDT in the past few decades due to health considerations and the effect on environment. Authorities are now faced with the problem of getting rid of bed bugs and are identifying appropriate bed bug treatment procedures to deal with them.
The other and very important reason is their ability to sneak into baggage and packages of people travelling from one place to another. That is how they have made their way back into these developed countries. Tourists and local people bring them along inadvertently whenever they visit such developed countries. The hotels they stay in may be one of the sources from where these bed bugs make their way into the baggage of the tourist.
This explains how despite following more than adequate hygiene regulations and ensuring that proper sanitation procedures are being followed, developed countries over the last few years have not been able to understand what are bed bugs and where do they come from?
So what are bed bugs and what do they look like?
These belong to the Arachnid family more famous for the species of spiders and are very adept at blood sucking. In fact they prey on most warm blooded mammals and though they do not look for body fluids, the fact that they do not discriminate between humans and other living beings make them quite an irritating species.
They are oval in shape and do resemble the cockroach the closest. But they have an advantage over the cockroach in terms of their extremely small size. This enables them to escape visibility and there are very few people who are even aware that their house is infected with bed bugs till they are regularly bitten and their skin rash gets out of control.
It is interesting that though they belong to the spider family, they do not resemble spiders and that probably explains why most people are not very bothered about them even when they spot them. As is well known, the spider is a dangerous insect and many are aware of how potent its sting or bite can be. People are therefore pretty particular about ensuring that their premises are free of spiders, cockroaches, mosquitoes and so on due to the severity of the bites and infections associated with them. When it comes to bed bugs however, most of us are either unaware of their existence due to their non visibility during day time or are just complacent fully knowing that their bites cannot be lethal.
Bed bugs feed like mosquitoes by inserting their fine and sharp tubules into the skin of the victim. The only difference is that while you may be able to feel the bite of a mosquito or even get to know that there is one nearby due to the peculiar buzz they emit, bed bugs are virtually difficult to spot. When they bite, they insert a chemical into the bloodstream which makes the victim drowsy. Consequently, there is no pain or sting experienced and the bed bugs feed till they are satiated.
If you wish to use a bed bugs spray, then this would be the most ideal time to do so. Having fed to their heart’s content, they find it difficult to move and can be easily sprayed upon. Remember, it is necessary to direct the bed bugs spray directly on the bed bugs to have effect as otherwise they will just slink away and hide in one of the many crevices. This would make it difficult to eliminate them totally and that is how they have been successful in remaining within a particular premise for a long time, happily feeding on the host and breeding.
The only positive aspect about them is that their bites do not cause the type of infections associated with ticks or mosquitoes. They are a species who do not have the capability to spread diseases and that is a major relief especially when one considers how difficult it is to spot them and get rid of them.
How do people react in general to the presence of bed bugs?
It is a fact that even when people actually suffer from bed bugs rash and other bed bugs symptoms, they often mistake those to be caused by mosquitoes or some other form of allergy arising due to them having eaten something. They rarely associate this condition with a bed bug bite and that is because very few have actually seen pictures of bed bugs to be able to quickly identify them and link their bed bug symptoms with them.
A typical bed bug bite will cause some redness or rash on the skin. The itching effect is similar to that of mosquitoes and there could also be a slight swelling. But generally there is not much harm caused beyond this and that is why perhaps people are not very bothered about bed bug bites.
So how can you actually capture these bed bugs and take other remedial measures?
One method advocated is the use of a soap bar that has been soaked in water so that it provides for a sticky surface. Now since you know that bed bugs are found mainly in the wooden frames of the bed or underneath the mattress, you only have to expose the frame and the mattress to quickly soak up the bed bugs on this sticky surface of the soap bar. This will enable you to at least take care of the some of the visible bed bug. You may also use this as enough proof to be shown to the hotel in charge so that they can take appropriate bed bugs treatment measures.
At home, one of the other measures you can try out if conventional bed bugs treatment methods have failed is the repainting of your bed as well as other wooden furniture in the room. This has proved to be quite effective as the paint gets into the very crevices harboring the bed bugs and flushes them out. They either have to come out or get sealed within the crevice and that is how you can ensure total elimination of these bed bugs.
Engaging a professional and experienced exterminating agency is the best option as they would know how to provide you a hassle free and permanent cure. The charges they would levy for this service would be well worth the time and effort they would have to take to do so.
To summarize, the presence of bed bugs can be a very irritating. If you know how they look and where to look for them in your house, you will be able to control their movement and even get rid of them totally.

My brother and my daughter ganged up on me. After having my kiddos I stayed 2 sizes too big. My precious (very thin daughter was running around and I was relenting to my brother about my weight. He said, “trapped in there is a kid who looks just like that, find her.” Since then, I have been inspired to take better care of myself including running. I hope the more I run, the more the running bug bites me.
I hate how spiders sit there on the wall and act like they pay rent.
