Mites – Know The Different Types And How To Deal With Them
When it comes to parasites like mites, there are so many varieties that you can easily get confused. Each of these types has the capability to affect humans, birds, plants and animals and often do so with great regularity. Human mites surface as skin mites whereas the mites on dogs or plant mites act in a different fashion. Then you also have the dust mites that are a different category altogether.
Earlier, it was not possible to distinguish between so many varieties of mites easily. Typically, when skin mites made their presence felt, it was in the form of scabies that the human individual suffered from. Unfortunately, not many individuals or even skin doctors were in a position to immediately diagnose the condition for adequate treatment to be taken. The result was that the individual often had to suffer scabies of a highly intensive nature before appropriate treatment could be meted out.
Today, however, advances in science and intense research has made it possible to get mites pictures and also determine the type of mites that are affecting humans or animals. This has helped in quicker diagnosis and thanks to more powerful as well as effective medication; humans as well as animals do not have to suffer the scourge of mites for too long.
What about dust mites?
Dust mites however require an approach that is more skewed towards prevention. The foremost thing that needs to be done is to make sure that the mattress is free of any pathogens and for this you need to vacuum or steam clean it along with other linen. Since the face is closest to the mattress and pillows, the chances of an infection through these parasites are very high and you need to avoid that. Once you clear these items of these pathogens, you need to put them in air-tight covers. You can also get anti-dust mites covers or cases from shops if you wish to play it very safe.
Another option is to wash all bed linen, pillow cases with hot water and allowing them to dry in the hot sun. Mites like most other parasites cannot withstand heat and are active only when they are able to hide in dark crevices or cool places. In case you have bought the pillow cover that is anti-dust mites, you only have to do this washing once or twice a year. One advantage with these covers is that they are very effective in preventing bed bugs as well. The problem of bed bugs is quite well known to most of us, especially in the developed world and people are always looking for solutions that can help them keep these pests away forever.
You can also go for pillows that are filled with synthetic material. These are chemically treated to ensure that mites and other parasites cannot attach themselves very easily to them. Go for a combination of cotton, woollen and nylon blankets if you are very particular about using natural materials. Similarly, the new memory foam pillows and mattresses too are very good but use them with the covers for better protection.
How can we prevent mites from proliferating?
As mentioned, parasites generally prefer the cooler and darker areas of the house. But mites have this ability to prosper even in conditions of high humidity. They have adapted to humidity in the tropical countries. Remember that countries that have high humidity are also places that are prone to a lot of dust and it is this combination that helps parasites like human mites as well as dust mites.
The only solution is to fit dehumidifiers in your bedroom so that you are able to maintain a dry environment. Using the air conditioner for an extended period of time will also go a long way in reducing the humidity within a room.
The bedroom in particular needs to be regularly vacuumed and kept totally clean of dust. The combination of dust along with the right temperature conditions gives dust mites and human mites just the ideal platform to stay put and increase their numbers with the passage of time.
If you find that your house is particularly prone to dust mites, check out the soft furnishings. You may have to get rid of the carpet and replace it with flooring that is ceramic or of stone. A hard surface will rob the mites of precious hiding place and also make it easy for you to clean regularly. Let us face it. Many of us often feel lethargic to vacuum clean as often as we should be doing so and it is this lethargy that often proves to be costly.
The use of air purifiers is yet another option that you can try out. These purifiers keep away most pathogens and if you can clear out the filters regularly, you need not bother about these mites. However, they are generally expensive, require maintenance and are not within the grasp of everybody. You can try out the cheaper options and see whether they are able to make the difference.
Though anti-allergen sprays are also available and have been found to be quite effective, the recommendation is not to use them extensively mainly because of the chemicals they contain. Since these chemicals contain particulate matter that can remain suspended in the room for a long time, it is advisable if you only use them sparingly. The sprays are also used on the bedding itself and small children with sensitive skin might find it irritating to their skin.
Coming to mites on dogs, it is the ear mites that causes dogs a lot of discomfort and if left untreated can even lead to deafness. These ear mites are very tiny and find the bodies of cats and dogs to be ideal homes for breeding. The life cycle is such that an egg can develop into an adult mite within 21 days. That is why they are most dangerous and have to be eliminated quickly. Once they increase in numbers, they can create a lot of irritation and you will often find dogs vigorously shaking their heads or trying to satisfy the craving of itching around the ear region. These are the most common symptoms.
The other symptoms are a nasty smell and wax in the ears. These mites though are not very easy to spot and if you think you would be able to remove them once you spot these symptoms in your pet dog or cat, you are mistaken. You need to immediately show your pet to the vet and take his opinion about whether the irritation is only due to the presence of mites or there are other complications.
The vet will most probably clean the ears physically of all debris and then use medication so that there is immediate impact on the mites that are hidden inside the ears. Follow up treatment can then be done by the owner at home making use of drops and other such remedies.
Once your pet is cured of the problem, ensure that it is not allowed to mix with other stray dogs or cats as mites can easily make a comeback. You also need to then regularly keep checking the skin, ears and teeth of your pet to prevent any recurrence.
