How To Get Rid Of Bed Bugs At Home – Not Very Difficult If You Follow The Basics
It is a problem that has been causing a lot of sleepless nights to many people especially in the developed countries. Yes, the reference is to the issue of bed bugs and how so many people are wondering how to get rid of bed bugs at home naturally.
Of late, people do not wish to use a bed bug spray that has a lot of chemicals and other synthetic ingredients in it. They are more cautious and aware that some of these ingredients may cause problems to the children as well as to the elderly folks in the family due to their lingering effect.
The only silver lining is that there is much better awareness about the bed bugs and why it is necessary to get rid of bugs house as quickly as possible. Most have also seen actual bed bugs pictures on the internet and can relate to the fact that they are so difficult to spot with the naked eye.
This is a far cry from the days when awareness about these pests was nonexistent. People regularly played host to these bugs every night and did not bother to visit their family doctor or skin specialist till they experienced a lot of discomfort. Minor rashes and the small punctures on the forearm or neck were often ignored as some allergic reaction and not treated.
Even when they visited the doctor, the treatment administered rarely took into consideration the bed bugs possibility and the consequence was that patients continued to suffer for some more days before the realization that their house has been invaded by bed bugs hit them.
It has to be mentioned here though that they could not be faulted for this line of thought. After all, nobody had heard of bed bugs over the last 35-40 years and thought these pests had been totally exterminated. To expect them to have made a comeback and that too in developed countries was something that never crossed anybody’s mind.
Pests like bed bugs were always associated or linked with squalor, dirt and grime. People in the developed countries with their much better sanitation and hygiene could never have imagined that these pests would be able to make a return and haunt them every night.
The point forgotten was that these bed bugs were extremely resilient and just needed a little help from people to be able to make their way back. That happened when tourism increased and both local as well as foreigners travelling between various developed and developing countries inadvertently brought these pests into the country through their personal baggage. The source in most cases was the hotel that many stayed in and since most of us do not have the discipline or habit to totally sterilize our baggage as well as its contents immediately on as we get back to our homes, we end up escorting these bed bugs that have attached themselves to our baggage.
The question then arises as to how to get rid of bed bugs at home naturally and as quickly as possible
There are two things that are involved in this process. There is preventive action and then there is the actual treatment. Preventive action to a great extent ensures that these bed bugs are not able to proliferate as they can and the treatment procedure is actually the stage when your house has a lot of bed bugs and you have no choice but to get rid of them at the earliest.
Prevention can start with identifying and getting rid of any clutter within the house. Bed bugs prefer hiding in the crevices of wood furniture and within the soft folds of curtains, wallpaper as well as upholstery. Ensure that you plug all holes and gaps in your wood furniture and thoroughly vacuum or steam clean carpets, curtains and upholstery.
Wash bed linen in hot water. Expose your mattress and other accessories like pillow covers to the hot sun. Bed bugs cannot withstand hot temperature and by doing this on a regular basis, you will ensure that they are never able to breed. Remember that the sooner you can act; the faster you will be able to get rid of them. It is only when people delay action that these pests start breeding and then it becomes difficult to eliminate them totally.
So how would you know that your house has been taken over by bed bugs?
The first signs are the tiny puncture marks on the exposed areas of your body like the forearms, neck and face. Do not neglect them especially if you see them formed in a particular pattern or cluster.
You then have to start looking for signs within the house. Typically, these pests hide beneath the bed, in the box frame, inside the seam lining of the mattress and other such soft furnishings. You have to look carefully at these places with a magnifying glass and torchlight and if you notice any brown streaking, tiny white particles, you must understand that there are bed bugs in your house. You may also be able to sense a strong odor in the room. Red spots too indicate faecal droppings and you may even be able to make out some signs of molting or skin cast offs.
These pests are active only during the late night and early morning hours. This would be the right time for you to look for them and in the darkness of the night as well as against the background of your torch, you should be able to see them scurrying for cover. If you notice light brown colored bodies, then it means that the pests have not been feeding off you. But if their bodies are dark colored, then it means that they have been having a good time feeding off you and are probably also breeding rapidly.
Though bites from bed bugs are not dangerous, they can cause scarring if left untreated. Blisters can develop that is foul smelling and the fact that every night you are a victim of these blood sucking pests by itself is enough to cause some stress.
The natural methods you can deploy to drive these pests out include making use of herbal sprays containing eucalyptus, tea tree oil and such strong smelling stuff in the hope that the bed bugs are unable to withstand the same. You may also use diatomaceous earth. This needs to be food-grade and has been found to be very effective in killing larvae of pests. Spraying boric acid and other botanical insecticides will also be of great use.
The main advantage with the above ingredients is that they are totally harmless and cannot cause any side effects like trouble in breathing due to any particulate matter suspension that is very much possible when you use a spray.
But if these methods fail you, then there is no alternative but to call a professional exterminating agency. They can provide you a solution that would be long term and as long as you regularly carry out yearly treatment procedures with them, your house should be very safe from these irritating pests.
The charges vary depending on the type of bed bugs treatment that would be required for your house and you should not mind spending the amount as it is absolutely essential that you get rid of these pests fully.
