How To Detect Bed Bugs – Know Basic Facts That Will Help You
The question of ‘how to detect bed bugs’ has been bugging many households in the US and many other developed countries. Ever since this problem has become such a serious one, people are keen to know how to find bed bugs during the day so that they can take guidance on how to get rid of bed bugs from their house. Since the last few years, this pest has been causing a lot of irritation and sleepless nights to individuals who have been affected. For some, the after effects of the bites and failure to address the problem immediately have led to some blemishes on their skin that they are finding embarrassing.
Though bites of bed bugs are not dangerous and they cannot cause any life threatening disease, the fact that many a time people tend to ignore the bites and end up scratching the areas affected leads to a situation of ugly marks on the skin. These marks are often found on the face, neck, arms and back of the individuals and that is why they need to be taken care as quickly as possible. Not doing so would mean that these marks would remain and that definitely is not something anybody would want to carry with them. People have had to remain indoors and have faced depression due to these marks appearing on their face and that is why it is necessary to know how to find bed bugs in your home and also know how to kill bed bugs such that they do not make a comeback.
So what are the other facts you should know that will help you understand how to find bed bugs in your bed or how to find bed bugs in a mattress?
We need to go back slightly in time to look at the genesis of the problem of why people are finding it difficult to spot bed bugs or become aware their house has been invaded by them. The bed bugs have been able to make a tremendous comeback over the past few years mainly due to a couple of reasons.
They were almost totally exterminated in the US as well as other European countries way back in the 1950s. In those times, the need to build infrastructure and improve agriculture yields led to the clearing of shanty colonies and the usage of DDT – a pesticide that spelt doom for these pests. Improvement in hygiene, sanitation and this pesticide led to the virtual elimination of bed bugs in countries like the US. It was therefore surprising and not expected by anybody that these pests would be able to make a return especially when sanitation conditions have been improving all the time.
The reason turned out to be a strange one and something that took researchers by surprise. It also helped them understand the resilience and adaptive capabilities of these bed bugs. The turn of this century has seen rapid improvements in communication and increased trade and tourism between countries of the developed and still developing countries. People have been travelling a lot between countries and have been inadvertently transporting these pests with them to their homes. Typically, a local from a developed country would visit another country or place where these bed bugs are already present and bring them back to his country either from a hotel room or from a place he or she visited in that country. The other possibility was that a tourist would visit US bringing with him these bed bugs without his knowledge, check into a hotel and allow these bed bugs an entry into the hotel.
Researchers found it surprising initially hotel rooms of top class hotels should be harboring bed bugs given the extent of cleanliness and sanitation they follow. But this discovery about incoming tourists carrying these bed bugs or locals checking into hotel rooms after a trip outside the country helped them understand the reasons clearly and they were thus able to piece together the entire sequence of events that has led to the resurgence of these pests in developed countries.
This is not to say that these are the only ways bed bugs can get into the house. The house needs to be free of clutter and high sanitation measures have to be followed at all times anyways to keep away pests like bed bugs. Transfer of infected objects into the house also allows bed bugs an entry into the house. The fact that they are so minute and cannot be seen makes it easy for them to quickly get into their favorite hiding places like the tiny crevices of wood furniture and soft folds of upholstery.
Having understood the cause, it became necessary to start finding ways of how to kill bed bugs once they could be detected. It was also necessary to understand the behavior of these bed bugs and the advantages they had as pests in terms of quick movements, preferred hiding places and so on so that appropriate measures to eliminate them could be designed.
It is a fact that not many people are aware of these pests and therefore tend to ignore the bite marks they see on their skin. Some get them treated for allergy or mosquito bites and in the process lose time, which helps these bugs to breed rapidly and strengthen their numbers in the house.
When you notice tiny red marks on your skin in a particular arrangement, you should know that your house has been invaded by bed bugs and while you should look for them all over the house, there are some specific places they prefer to hide during day time. But you cannot see them even if you tried to during day time and the only option is to look for them late into the night or in the morning early hours.
You should look for typical tell tale signs like fecal droppings, molting, signs of eggs, a strange odor within the room and whether you are able to actually see them moving about. They have flat, oval shaped bodies that are translucent. If not well fed, this color is light brown or even colorless but when they have had their fill, their bodies turn dark brown to black in color and this is enough indication about the extent of infestation in your house.
You should then take immediate steps to try to get rid of them. The first step is to plug all holes in your wood furniture, particularly within the box springs of your bed. Steam clean all soft furnishing materials and if possible, wash bed linen in hot water or keep them out in the sun to dry. Bed bugs cannot tolerate heat and will slink away. Make use of a good quality bed bug spray and use it underneath the bed as well as in other places that are dark and can provide a possible hiding place for these pests.
If these measures fail, you would be left with no option but to call upon a professional exterminating agency. They are professionals and would have the necessary equipment as well as trained manpower to help you. They would know how to detect bed bugs and eliminate them such that your house is free of these irritating pests.
