Ultimately, it however boils down to the prevention and how you need to keep them away from your house. Let us look at some precautions you can follow to avoid these bed bugs totally.

a) The first one is to understand and get some prior knowledge about the hotel you are about to stay in. Thanks to the internet, you can get many honest reviews of hotel rooms and the service provided in those hotels. That can be of help to you in finding out whether a particular hotel has a bed bugs problem and if yes, avoid staying in that hotel. Independent reviews are often honest ones and you can rely on them.

b) Once you do check into a hotel room, you must first do a physical inspection of the room and the bed as well as any wooden furniture. Check for these pests on the underside of the mattresses, linen, soft folds of upholstery. It is difficult to spot them with the naked eye and therefore you must carry a magnifying glass with you to do this inspection.

c) Check for any brown spotting or smears on the box frames of the bed or on linen. These are definite indications of bed bugs infestation and you should immediately report this to the hotel room supervisor to check out of the room and even out of the hotel. There is no point in just changing the room as you cannot be sure of not finding bed bugs there as well. Just don’t take a chance and leave the hotel.

d) The headboard as well as the drawers of the dressing table as well as the cupboards is a typical hide out for these pests. They are often dark and ideal for them to hide during day time.

e) Always place your belongings on the bureau or dresser and not on the floor. If there is a rack provided for the luggage, go ahead and use it. Keeping stuff on the floor makes it easy for any pest to climb onto and that is why you must ensure that even the purse you are carrying is secure in the closet or high up on the table.

f) Always take along a bed bug spray with you as a precaution. Opt for the one that is not toxic as you are going to spend the night in the same room. The spray is also useful during the time you check out. All you have to do is spray the personal items and your baggage so that any bed bugs that have got on board do not survive.

g) When you undress, make sure that the clothing you are no longer going to use is put into plastic bags and not left exposed.  Seal the bags. You can get big bags that can be zippered up for total protection. Once you reach home, you can immediately steam wash these clothes and not bother about the stuff you have not used at all.

h) Hang the bags containing the clothing away from your bed.

The above precautions are just some that you can follow when you are a traveler. Being aware of the fact that you can provide a free entry for bed bugs from hotel rooms into your house is in itself a major step that will help you prevent such infestation. Some of the steps mentioned above may seem very cumbersome and impractical, but considering the increasing number of bed bugs in hotels cases, it is advisable to be careful and the above measures should be of great help.
