Bed Bug Size – Very Deceptive And Misleading

Size is not everything when it comes to insects and parasites. The dust mite size or the flea size is hardly anything to talk about, but all of us know the kinds of trouble they can cause in human beings and animals. Dust mite bites and the manner in which they can quickly increase in numbers have directly impacted the intensity and scabies size infections in human beings. Similarly, flea size or the lack of it has not resulted or led to any decrease in pets like dogs and cats suffering from flea outbreaks. Unless checked on time, we all know the trouble these fleas can cause these pets.

On a similar note, bed bugs too have the capability to cause a lot of irritation and frustration in human beings. A bed bug size comparison with a dust mite size or flea size may show these pests to be a notch bigger but in actual fact they too have body sizes that are pretty tiny. However, it is this size that is very deceptive and misleading as they can over time cause bites that are very itchy. Here too, your ability to quickly discover that your house has been infected with bed bugs holds the key to controlling and eliminating them. Failure to do so will mean that they are able to feed off you night after night by sucking your blood.

Fortunately, as compared to scabies, the bites of bed bugs are not contagious or bed bugs by themselves cannot cause any disease that is life threatening. They cannot fly and that is a major reason for this. But if their tiny bites are not treated on time and left to fester, they can cause blisters that could lead to ugly skin rash. Considering that it is mainly the exposed areas of the face, neck, arms that are usually the targets of bed bug bites, these ugly marks can become a source of embarrassment.

In addition to the bites and sucking action that you would be subjected to on a daily basis, you and your family members would have to bear the brunt of their increasing presence in your house with every passing day. Bed bugs multiply rapidly and have tremendous resilience. You would not be able to starve bed bugs to death as they can live without their usual quota of blood for as long as 3 months. The only activity that might get reduced due to this would be their breeding. You would thus have to get to know the problem immediately and eliminate them as quickly as possible if you have to control their growing presence in your house.

A brief background about bed bugs

A reference has been made above to the resilience of these pests. It is worth remembering that these pests were virtually eliminated out of most developed countries. Post 1950 when rapid industrialization and increased focus on boosting agriculture produce became the intent of the government, the clearing of shanties and prolonged use of DDT – a pesticide worked wonders in driving these pests out. For the next five decades, the incidence of bed bugs infestation was hardly recorded or known. This was also a time when any access to photos of bed bugs, bed bug bites or bed bugs pictures eggs were just not available. The result was that most second generation and third generation individuals were totally oblivious to this problem till the beginning of the 21st century.

However things were about to change and they did with amazing swiftness. Since the mid 1990s, the use of DDT had been severely curtailed and by the beginning of 2000, this pesticide was not in use at all in developed countries. During this time, globalization and the introduction of the internet as well as explosion of mobile services ensured that people could now communicate and enter into business relationships more quickly and efficiently.

More and more people also began travelling between countries. You thus had a situation where both local and tourists inadvertently became responsible for the entry of bed bugs back into developed countries. They stayed in hotels and managed to carry these pests back into their houses. They visited crowded tourist locations already infected with bed bugs and succeeded in helping these pests attach themselves to their clothing, baggage and so on. The resilience of these pests can be well understood when you consider that they have been able to make a comeback to those countries from where they were almost totally eliminated.

We thus had a situation where people were not even aware that they had enabled these pests to make an entry into their houses till they actually started to experience the itching and discomfort associated with the bites of these pests. The thinking till then in at least developed countries was that as long as appropriate cleanliness was maintained, there was no need to bother about such insects and they would be found only in developing as well as under developed countries where sanitation was still not as good as that prevailing in the developed countries.

So why is the small size so deceptive and misleading?

The small size enables bed bugs to adhere to the personal effects of travelers. Once they enter the house, their flat oval shaped bodies help them quickly get into the tiny crevices of wood furniture and within the folds of soft furnishings like upholstery, curtains and so on. They cannot be seen during day time as it is only during night time and early morning when they make their entry into the bed of the hosts.

At this time, the hosts are blissful in sleep and present soft targets for these pests to comfortably suck blood. This happens night after night and it is not only when their bites cause tiny punctures on the exposed skin in a peculiar cluster that the hosts notice them. Even at this stage, the thinking usually is that the bites are due to some allergy and get treated accordingly. By the time, the realization dawns on people affected that their house has been invaded by bed bugs, it becomes quite late and these pests succeed in multiplying several times over.

So how do you identify their presence and what steps can you take to eliminate them?

You can make out their presence by checking underneath your bed linen, within the box frames of the bed and inside the folds of curtains as well as upholstery. You would be able to make out brown stains, fecal matter, molting and eggs if you look at the right areas with torchlight. There are many bed bugs pictures eggs that you can find on the internet and compare.

These pests also give off a strange odor when they are in a room. This is similar to the smell of coriander or almonds that have gone rancid. Once you are convinced of their presence, you must take immediate steps to eliminate them from your home.

Start off by exposing your bed linen, curtains and covers to hot sun as these pests cannot withstand heat. Steam clean soft upholstery and vacuum them thoroughly so that all possible traces of bed bugs are removed. Washing them with hot water is another option.
