If you asked many of the youngsters and even middle aged people in developed countries about bed bugs, you are likely to receive a blank look. Many of them may have a vague idea that you are referring to an insect species but would be hard put to tell you exactly how they look or whether they are capable of causing diseases like scabies and so on. Still many would not have seen any bed bug rash pictures or for that matter know about any bed bug treatment methods.
Leave alone bed bugs. Even flea pictures, lice pictures or that of dust mite pictures is not stuff that people love to see or would take the initiative to look at unless they are researching about them or are forced to find out more about them due to any reason.
So what is the reason for this?
It has to be understood that insects like the bed bugs were only prevalent in developed countries about 4-5 decades back. Hence elderly folk would be well aware of them and the problems they can cause. In those times, the foundation for good sanitation and hygiene were being laid. Countries were recovering after the effects of World War II and there was lot of clutter strewn around that made it easy for all types of insects to breed and proliferate.
But post active industrialization and development coupled with much better hygiene as well as improvement in living conditions, they were eliminated and were rarely found in households. As more and more people became aware and could get access to better sanitation, insects which seemed to thrive on such conditions found it difficult to survive. By that time, some very effective pesticides were also developed which made it impossible for insects to survive.
Another reason for their disappearance was the rampant use of DDT. This strong pesticide that was used to improve agricultural production proved to be the nemesis for bed bugs. But in the last couple of decades and especially after the use of DDT was prohibited, these insects have been able to make a comeback even in developed countries.
But youngsters and middle aged people born post World War II have not had to suffer bed bugs infestation to any great extent and are therefore totally oblivious to the problems these insects can cause. It is only now with the spread of the internet that you can view bed bug rash pictures and understand how they come into being through other bed bug life cycle pictures.
So how have they come back in these developed countries?
One of the reasons has been given above. The stoppage of use of DDT has definitely made an impact. But the more telling reason is the fact that these bugs are often transported inadvertently by travelers visiting these developed countries or local people visiting other countries and bringing these insects back along with the personal effects like baggage and so on.
These bed bugs are extremely mobile and are able to rapidly acclimatize themselves to changed environments. People who travel often invariably do not sanitize their belongings upon return and that is how they manage to bring these insects home. The pests then quickly find ideal hiding places within the clutter of wooden furniture and start breeding.
Despite all this happening, people in the house are not aware of them as they are pretty invisible to the naked eye. It is only upon noticing red rashes on the skin after repeated biting and sucking incidents that they begin to look for the causes.
Now you may be wondering as to why people have to undergo repeated biting or sucking incidents to become aware of these pests?
The reason is that when these bed bugs bite a person, it is normally on the face, neck or arms. The incident takes place late into the night or during early morning when most of us are very drowsy with sleep. However, the main reason is not this. When they insert their proboscis into your skin, they release a chemical that has a doping or numbing effect on you. It is thus difficult to experience the sting or sucking action. When you are already drowsy and when you have this intoxicating effect produced during the early morning hours, it becomes clear how they manage to escape attention.
Unlike mosquito bites that are sharp and you can feel the sting or even hear the mosquitoes buzzing about, these bed bugs are silent blood suckers. After repeated incidents, the host begins to notice a pattern of puncture bite marks that begin to itch. That is when the realization that there has been an insect attack dawns on the person. At this point unless the host is conversant with bed bugs and their behavior pattern, the chances are that these marks are often ignored or treated for allergy and even mosquito bites. Very often, even skin doctors are unaware and unable to diagnose that the marks have been caused by bed bugs.
Bed bug pictures? Let us now understand what these pictures of bed bugs tell us
The pictures reveal that these bed bugs are wingless creatures measuring less than half an inch and having waxy body cover. The cover is translucent and you can actually see the difference when these insects have fed off a host. You will see the normally brown body change to dark brown or red depending on the amount of blood they are able to suck off a host.
Though they are wingless, they can move about very quickly and manage to get into crevices and tiny gaps. Their oval flat bodies help them get into these nooks pretty easily and that is where they hide during day time. The crevices sought by them are usually very close to their prey such as the wooden frames of box beds. At night they emerge from these places and begin to feed on the sleeping host.
Where should you look for them?
As mentioned, the crevices of wooden furniture, bed mattress lining and soft furnishings like curtains, sofa upholstery are the places where they tend to hide. You should also look out for eggs and molting signs. The eggs are very small and you might not be able see them with the naked eye but some signs accompanied by a strange odor will indicate to you that they are indeed present.
The reason these eggs have to be removed is because they hatch within 10 days and you will soon have another army of bed bugs you would have to contend with. Remember the queen bed bug can lay up to 300 eggs at one time. The bed bug treatment therefore has to be a comprehensive one.
The recommendation is to go for a professional exterminating agency. They would know how to go about the task and will ensure that you get total relief from these pests. Do not try to deal with them all by yourself as you may not have the right equipment and knowledge to use the bed bug spray or other pesticides in the appropriate manner. This might lead to a recurrence of the problem and you would have to repeat the process which is time consuming as well as expensive.
