Bed Bug Bite Symptoms – Track Them Early
The bed bugs problem is a very real one with many houses in the US finding it difficult to deal with. Bed bug infestations are becoming more and more common in many States in the US and though many people are now much more aware of the problem thanks to bed bugs pictures on the internet, the question of how to prevent their entry and how to get rid of bed bugs remains a pertinent one.
The reason why many houses find the problem of scabies or bed bugs bothering them is because they do not recognize or track dust mite symptoms or bed bug bite symptoms quickly enough. In many cases, bed bug bite symptoms are thought to be mosquito bite symptoms or some allergy that needs a different line of treatment. That line of thinking is also followed by some of the skin doctors and by the time they realize that they are barking up the wrong tree, it becomes too late. The bed bugs become entrenched in the house and then it becomes difficult to get rid of them.
So first of all, let us understand what are bed bugs?
These are insects that thrive in dark hiding places and a diet of warm blood of humans or mammals. They surface only during late night or in the wee hours of the morning and find hosts from whom they can get their quota of warm blood. Their saliva contains a chemical that leads to the individual already enjoying sleep to become drowsier and this enables them to suck blood to their heart’s content.
This practice of sucking blood from the host continues night after night by different bed bugs. Their life cycle has seven stages out of which the larval stage has four different cycles. In these cycles, the only job of these larvae is to feed, hibernate and molt their skin. They attain maturity in about 50 days and become fit to breed in six months. With each female having the capacity to lay around 500 eggs, you can imagine the speed at which they can take over a house within a short period of time.
Their bites do not cause serious disease and that is the only silver lining. Bed bugs cannot fly and therefore are also incapable of causing any infectious diseases. But their small oval flat bodies are ideal for hiding in the nooks and corners of furniture and that is how they spend the day time. This makes it difficult for anybody to spot them and is the main reason why they are not identified or acted upon sooner.
Another reason for people finding it difficult to track bed bug bite symptoms is basic awareness about the existence of such insects. The modern generation and the one that came into existence beyond 1950 have not had to face the problem of bed bugs at all mainly because these pests were driven out of developed countries like the US following hectic industrialization and usage of DDT.
But the turn of this century has seen them make a comeback and the reasons attributed to it are a combination of active tourism and the total prohibition of DDT usage. Consequently, you had locals and tourists mingling with each other in different countries and bringing home these pests. That took place due to the tremendous adaptability and resilience of these pests which enabled them to latch on to the personal belongings and clothing of individuals at hotel rooms and other crowded places. They were then able to make an entry into the houses of these very individuals without any problems and once inside could proliferate quickly due to lack of action on the part of these individuals till it became too late.
So what are the typical bed bite symptoms that you should be aware and alert about?
Bed bugs as mentioned have a habit of sucking blood from exposes body parts such as the neck, face, arms and legs. They keep up this feeding activity intermittently in the sense that the bug that bit you today may not feed again tomorrow. But at the same time, another bed bug might bite you at the same place or at a different spot and suck your blood. Consequently, you may not see visible rash on your skin immediately and may notice it only when they are formed as tiny dots in a particular cluster formation.
Here again, the formation of the rash by itself may not always be spotted if it is not accompanied by itching. There have been many cases of individuals carrying on as if nothing had happened mainly because the rash on their skin did not cause them any hardship. But once it begins itching and you have the uncontrollable urge to scratch the area where your blood has been sucked, you should take it that your house has been infected and you need to take immediate action in terms of appropriate bed bug treatment procedures.
Once you notice these puncture marks, you should now look within the house and the first target should be your bed as well as the box frame of your bed. Bed bugs by virtue of their small size can easily hide within these crevices and within the seams of bed linen. They are also adept at picking out the soft folds of curtains and upholstery where they remain hidden during day time and surface at night.
It is obviously difficult to spot them at day time. Hence take a torch and a magnifying glass and wake up late night in order to look at them. You will find them in large numbers beneath the bed scurrying for cover when you train the light on them. Notice the color of their translucent bodies. If you find them to be light brown or colorless, you can estimate that they have just made an entry into your house and have not been very active feeding. But if you find their bodies dark colored, you can bet that they have been having a good time feeding off you and the chances are that they might have also started breeding. This is a more serious situation and demands your immediate action.
What actions can you take to get rid of bed bug infestations?
Ideally, prevention should be the first and is the best line of action. Make sure you get rid of clutter and maintain a high level of cleanliness. Ensure you sanitize all your belongings thoroughly when you are back from a trip that you have made outside your home city.
But once your house is already infested, you have to take specific steps like steam cleaning your bed linen, washing bed clothes in hot water and putting your mattress out into the sun to dry. Bed bugs cannot tolerate the heat of the sun and will make a hasty retreat.
You must also purchase a high quality bed bug spray and use it in the areas where you have found these pests. If that does not help, then call upon the services of a professional bed bug exterminator to do the needful.
Remember, identifying bed bugs bite symptoms is the key to managing the problem of bed bug infestations.
